February Serves Up Some Great Fishing and Weather
February is now over along with summer, it has been one of our driest summers on record and certainly the driest I can remember in the bay. This has influenced some of the fishing with good rain needed to flush some more bait into the bay. Generally it has been fairly good but we have had some patchy fishing at times.
Longtail tuna are now in full swing with smaller models turning up in February. These fish average 4- 7 kg and are great sport on stick baits and sub surface with soft plastics. Queenfish, mac tuna, golden trevally, diamond trevally, cobia, spotted mackerel and more have kept anglers busy. Working soft plastics and vibes around the tuna schools has also seen the golden trevally landed along with the odd small cobia, spotted mackerel, queenfish and Spanish mackerel.
Looking towards March we should see a increase in queenfish, longtail and grey mackerel activity throughout the bay. Autumn sure is a great time of year on the bay for pelagics, with mostly south east trade winds from now through to late April making ideal conditions for a run up the Island.
For fly fishers the longtail tuna and Mac tuna have been great fun, casting crease flies and surf candies around the working fish on the blue water is always exciting fishing. On the flats, southern blue bastartd’s, golden trevally and longtails have been caught by fly anglers. The next few months will see some great fly fishing opportunities.
We have dates available so please email us to secure your piece of the action.
Snapper Season 2017
Looking forward to the months ahead with some great fishing in front of us. Won't be long before the snapper arrive. Targeting big snapper on the calm waters of Hervey Bay is very unique, size certainly makes up for numbers with many southern anglers getting their PB snapper from Hervey Bay while out with us.
If you are interested in targeting winter snapper please drop us an email to secure your dates.
We have two spots left on one of our Mother Shipping trips in April. The dates are April 10-13 inclusive giving you 3 nights on the mother ship and 4 days fishing. Target species will be golden trevally, various tunas, mackerels, queenfish and more. All food is included fishing 2 anglers per boat. If you would like any details please get in touch with us. It will be at a last minute discounted rate.
