June has now been and gone, it has been a busy time for HBFSF with some great fishing coming into winter. Winter see’s our annual migration of snapper move from the deeper waters near the shelf into the bay as they follow the yakka schools and feed up ready to spawn. Warmer than usual water temps have seen a slower start to the season then we would have liked, but things have begun to swing into gear of late.
Other species active have been broad bar mackerel, various trevally species including diamond and golden, coral trout, cod, sweetlip, school mackerel, mac and longtail tuna.
Longtail tuna this time of year hang deep, fishing the yakka schools has been productive with big mac tuna also in the mix. Other cool captures have been some big cobia which have been a handful on light tackle. Guests have enjoyed the gentle warm winter weather with afternoon glass making for a great run home.
As we move into the coldest months of the year July and August we will see a few more snapper move in which will make for some great fishing. Catching snapper next to tropical species like golden trevally is unique to our waters. This makes for some exciting fishing and keeps anglers guessing. Other species that we will be targeting in the coming months will be golden trevally, cobia, winter tuna’s mac and longtail, scarlets, dusky flathead, bream, tailor, mackerel and more. We have some great shallow water flathead fishing here, a species overlooked by many. On a windy day when the bay can’t be fished effectively, it is a great option.
We are certainly looking forward to the rest of the winter season.
