March Madness As Longtail Tuna Arrive

March saw some world class fishing, but the weather also played it’s part. We lost a few day’s to strong south easterly winds as we had a few low pressure systems causing some havoc off the coast. These winds are the norm for this time of year and with the weather patterns come the longtails. We have had a good start to the season hopefully they continue to turn it on over the coming months.

Other species through March we encountered were Spanish, school and spotted mackerel, diamond, golden, tea leaf and bludger trevally, queenfish, cod, cobia, scarlets, mac tuna and more.

This Scarlet was a welcome catch.

We had some great sessions on the longtails with a range of lures working well, Nomad mad scads, cotton cordell pencil poppers, zman soft plastics, slugs and more were used to entice the longtails. Some great surface bites were had making for some epic fishing. We also had some good sessions on the flats with golden trevally, queenfish and longtails turning up taking our offerings on both lure and fly.

As we move through April the longtail tuna will continue to be the main feature for sport fisherman. We will start to see winds shift a little from the south east to the odd morning of southerly’s. This is the normal transition as we move closer to winter. Other species available through April will be queenfish, various mackerels, tuna, golden trevally and more.
