The whiting have been great this week, and it has actually been the summer whiting off the beaches that have been producing. I watched quite a few get caught right out the front of the shop around lunch time Wednesday. The fishos were told to watch their sizes though, and much to my dismay they did not know the difference between the summer and winter varieties. After a quick identification lesson the gents were well on their way to catching the night’s meal.

Bream is another species that is firing at the moment. The rock wall at the marina is doing very well for bream around the 800g mark. Live bait is a good help, although they are taking mullet or fowl gut. River Heads, off the rocks or the barge ramp, has also produced great bream at night.

Nathan has been hitting the Artificial Reef over the past couple of days and still manages a feed of snapper every trip. The leatherjacket are still thick out there as well as the odd grass sweetlip. Bonito and mack tuna are hanging around the beacon at the top end of Big Woody if you’re after a good strip bait.

FRASER ISLAND

Please Note: Waters Closes to all forms of Fishing on Fraser Island – The Eastern Foreshore waters and waters within 400m out to sea from the eastern shore at low water, between 400m north of Waddy Point and 400 m South of Indian Head. Closed from midday 1st August to midday 30th September every year (fin fish only).

The weather is fantastic and the fish are firing, which is great news for Jim, who is heading over for a week’s fishing somewhere on the island. It’s certainly tailor season at the moment with reports of the greenbacks coming in as well as chopper tailor in most of the gutters. Hot spots are Yidney Rocks through to Happy Valley.

Dart, bream, whiting and flathead have also been caught in the shallower gutters around the Happy Valley area. The weed is completely gone and the weather is great, which is brilliant news for all you fishos wanting to hit the beaches.
