Report Thur 5th Oct 06

Post by Brad » Fri Oct 06, 2006 5:31 am

Three, nine-day periods have been implemented as closed seasons to the taking of all coral reef fin fish in October, November and December each year around the new moon phases. The closures apply to all Queensland east coast waters between latitude 10?41 S and 24?50 S. The closures are designed to protect spawning aggregations of most coral reef fish species.

The closures for 2006 will be:
• 16 October 2006 to 24 October 2006 (inclusive)
• 14 November 2006 to 22 November 2006 (inclusive)
• 14 December 2006 to 22 December 2006 (inclusive).

Well we certainly have had some great weather over the past week and the fishing has been reasonable. Whiting are really on the chew at the moment on the beaches from Toogoom right through to the Urangan Pier. Live yabbies are definitely the way to go, but if they aren’t an option, then worms and prawns will work as well.

The reef fishing has been decent, with grass sweetlip starting to emerge for the season. The snapper are still around although reports are that they are very small and 80% of them are under sized.

It’s time to dust off the cast nets as the prawns in the Burrum are starting to run, and if they are there we should start seeing them in their usual haunts around the Mary and Susan river mouths directly. If you’re a bit rusty on the casting or want to try your hand at prawning, pop in and see the boys for a cast net lesson. We’ll have you casting like a pro in 10 minutes!

Tailor are still on at the moment and in most of the gutters along the beach. With Indian Head now open for fishing, fishos have been heading up off the rocks and reaping the rewards. Tailor and jew at night are the main species caught.

Hot spots are around the Maheno wreck and Cathedrals for the tailor, dart and sand whiting.

Beach travel is advised at low tide only. Caution is needed when travelling during the school holidays.
