HERVEY BAY
If you have never tried sweet water fishing; Lenthalls Dam is definitely the place to be to try your luck. The bass and barra are absolutely sizzling at the moment and are biting on anything that moves. Cultiva Poppers and other surface lures are proving the most effective, although Daiwa Pro Vibe lures are also producing the fish.

The saltwater fishing is a more sombre affair this week. The strong south easterly winds have hampered fishing efforts and everyone has reported that the creeks and rivers are the place to head.

Whiting are still around on most of the beaches. The more protected areas such as Fixter Park off Toogoom and around Gatakers Bay are the more pleasant spots to head.

Try for threadfin salmon on live baits around River Heads for a bit of fun, and it’s worth throwing the pots in while you’re fishing. There are barramundi lurking in these waters so if you do on the off chance catch one, it must be returned to the water immediately. It is also illegal to specifically target barra during the closed season.

Very rough seas and big morning tides are making it quite difficult to fish and drive along the beaches of the eastern side this week. The best chance for a feed is at low tide in the protected areas of Indian Head and Waddy Point out of the wind. There are reports of good tailor, dart and whiting in those areas.
