The unusual cool, strong south east winds over Christmas/New Year have made fishing a little difficult in our exposed waters.

I have been told of good catches of early morning sweetlip and blackall coming off the car bodies and the graves (northern end of Woody Island) – best baits to use are fresh prawns or squid for the blackall.

There have been good catches of cod in the deep hole just off the boat ramp at River Heads being taken on live mullet and herring.

King salmon have been caught up river around Beavers Rock on the run out tide casting shallow diving lures into the banks where you can see any bait fish kicking around.

Live herring have been taking good catches of salmon in the Susan River and good jacks also have been caught off the rock bars near the moored yachts in the channel.

The upper reaches of the Burrum River have produced some nice grunter and cod. Still no sign of the prawns. More rain is needed to make them run.

The protection of Gatakers Bay in the strong S/E winds has been popular. Very nice catches of blackall and parrot have been taken early morning. A few small trout have been taken on trolled shallow diving lures in flurocolours.

Mackerel, both school and broad bar, have been caught were it drops off at the mouth of the Burrum and the Urangan Pier. The pier rats have excellent hook ups using
Flasha spoons and livies on gang hooks.

Soft plastics have now been introduced to the light land based game fishing for large macks and tuna off the pier. Four inch Powerbaits in pearl watermelon colour will work
if you cast up current. A fast taper graphite rod between 6-8 kg married up with a good quality spinning reel will handle these fish.

I have been told of some good sized whiting taken off Shelly Beach at night. Live yabbies are the go.

Phil tells me it’s been rough and the water is so dirty to the point it is almost unfishable.

If you are keen, the protected areas around Indian and Waddy Point are still giving up dart and bream.

The western creeks are the place to be with Awinya and Worralie creeks full of flathead at the moment.
