Hervey Bay
Fishing this week throughout the bay has been quite productive especially around the shallow reefs. Good quality coral beam up to 2kg being landed using live yabbies and fresh hardy heads. By catches of big blackall have also made the table. These fish are under rated for their eating quality , but if prepared correctly they make for excellent eating. Blackall need to be bled immediately after capture to insure a nice white flesh and then bed down in an ice saltwater slurry. The larger fillets can be sliced in half for a thinner fillet. Black All are exceptionally good fighters and will take you into the reef any chance they get, so fish 15lb line with a 20lb leader for a better success rate. Baits include fresh squid and yabby balls.
Coral Trout have been caught on the troll around the edges of the reefs at Woody Island and and Gatakers Bay , the RMG and Classic Barra Elton John colour pattern seems to be working better than most. A slow troll is recommended (>2knots) with a heavy drag setting.
Estuary Cod are the go around River Heads at the moment, the deeper holes around the mangroves are the places to try, you may even pick up the odd Mangrove Jack in these areas also.
Golden Trevally are around the NU2 Beacon as well as school Mackerel. The old Trawler wreck 200m just north of the Marker is a great place to anchor up. Live baits for the trevally, and soft plastics for the mackerel should have you in good stead to catch a weigh in fish for the Hervey Bay Fishing Comp!
Longtail Tuna and spotty mackerel are out further around platypus bay and off Wathumba Creek.
The beaches have been doing well for whiting, expecially around shelley beach and the pier. Live yabbies again being the best baits for the bigger sized fish.
