Weekly Report 24 Jun 10

Post by Brad » Thu Jun 24, 2010 10:13 pm

Conditions have been pretty average this week for boaties; however the weekend looks more promising. Just keep an eye on the forecast for any changes before heading out. The Urangan Pier has been producing some excellent bream, particularly early morning and night. Small herring have beenworking best, fished close to the pylons. Whiting and flatheadare also on offer, with a few school mackerel being caught off the end on live herring.Along the beaches, quality summer whiting have been caught at Shelly Beach and around Eli Creek. Live yabbies and sand worms have been the baits of choice, with a few anglers targeting them on surface poppers in the shallows. Bream, cod and small trevally have been the main catches off the rocks around Point Vernon and Gatakers Bay. A few local squid have also been reported so don't forget a squid jig or two. This time of year, you can expect to catch bream, flathead, tailor and the odd jew around river heads. Soft plastics work particularly well along with fresh bait. If you're targeting jewies, best results can be obtained by fishing live bait at night. Down the straits, whiting and bream can be found on the flats and are good targets on surface poppers and soft plastics. Fishing the creek mouths and adjacent banks on the run out tide will be another good option for flathead.

Finally the snapper have started to turn up in better numbers over the last week. For those with smaller vessels, try the Arti or Burrum 8 Mile. Over these shallower reefs, soft plastics are very effective both day and night. Those venturing further afield should try the Fairway Buoy, 25 Fathom Hole, Wathumba and Rooney's. Shimano Lucanus jigs have been quite popular when fishing deeper water for snapper with some excellent catches under their belt.
