Weekly Report 13 Apr 12

Post by Brad » Fri Apr 13, 2012 6:57 pm

A spectacular weekend of weather was present for the Burrum Heads Fishing Competition last weekend. Winning weights were: Flathead- 2.5kg, Whiting- .563, Bream- .96, Trumpeter- 2.33, Parrot- 1.06, Tusk- 12.03, Blackall- 5.4, Golden Trevally- 8.49, Red Emperor- 5.75 and Coral Trout- 3.6kg. Congratulations to all the winners. The weather on Saturday was good enough to enable quite a few competitors to venture to the Gutters and the wider grounds for the winning catches of parrot, emperor and coral trout.

Yours truly didn’t catch anything near the weights of the winners but had a great time fishing for whiting on the Saturday and then reef fish on the Sunday Morning from the Artificial Reef. We caught a feed on both days but the big tidal range didn’t allow much bottom fishing time except around the top and bottom of the tides. This weekend should see the lower tidal range present an opportunity to fish right through the tides. I look forward to testing my theory! This reporting is a very hard ‘job’ you know!!

This weekend is predicted to once again have the strong southerly winds so there will be the opportunity to fish the more sheltered shore spots. Eli Creek has been fishing well for whiting and flathead on the incoming tides. It has been very popular with the family groups over the holiday which is good to see. Whiting, flathead, gar and the occasional bream are still being reported from the esplanade beaches from Pialba to Urangan. A couple of Golden Trevally have been reported from the deep waters at the end of the Pier on live baits. The Pier may be worth a try this weekend if the winds are kind. River Heads has reports of flathead and grunter with the occasional barra and salmon being caught also. Overall it sounds as though there should be a great range of species available for those that are fishing Hervey Bay waters this weekend. Good luck to all. Until next week, John
