Anglers were more than happy with their catch last week during Hervey Bay’s family fishing comp. Weigh master Dave Ingrey said the quality of fish weighed in this year was excellent! There was a 36cm whiting weighed in live, which was caught in the Burrum River, a 69cm flathead landed at Round Island and blackall up to 9kg.

The tides this weekend are still quite big, so there will be a fair bit of run in the deeper holes. Longtail and mack tuna have made their mark throughout the straits, between Moon Point and Kingfisher Bay last week, with the smaller tides, but I’ve been told they have moved back up north of the Arty. Chrome slices in the 20 to 40 gm range seem to be working best. Sweetlip, blackall and small snapper are biting at sun up and during the night on the Arty and at the top of Woody and Round islands. Squid and pillies are working well for bait.

The river mouths and creeks are producing a great run of good sized prawns. Remember a bag limit of a 10 litre bucket per person applies. Buy a cast net from us and Brock will show you how to cast it.

The barra fired up over the full moon at Monduran and Awonga, on Mars and deep RMG Scorpion lures.
