The mackerel seem to be around at the moment. Try around most of your beacons for school, spotty and broad barred mackerel. Use Producer lures while trolling and Flasha Lures when spinning. Make sure you know the difference between the schoolie and spotties. School mackerel can be differentiated from the spotted mackerel by a patch of white on their dorsal fin.

The artificial reef is still producing good grass sweetlip, blackall and squire on pilchards and squid.

Summer whiting are around the beacons at Toogoom, on Shelley Beach and the first channel of the pier. Live yabbies are the best bait there, but if you can’t pump them yourself, beach worms and prawns are the go.

Mud crabs and prawns can be found in the Mary and Susan river systems. The Burrum River is a good spot too, but head up the Gregory River at the moment for the more rewarding catches.
