Report 21/07/14

Post by Nicole Penfold » Mon Jul 28, 2014 4:38 pm

After a nasty week of windy weather it looks like we may have a break finally. The fishing has been good on the days that conditions allowed anglers to venture out. This week we have building tides which should produce a few nice reef fish along with firing up our winter estuary species.

Burrum
The Burrum has been tough, the upper and mid reaches was the pick of places to be, bream, flathead, trevally and Jew have been reported. Out the front winter whiting will be an option in front of Woodgate with snapper worth a look for at Burrum 8 and 12 mile reefs.

Local Reefs
The Artificial has produced a few snapper but looking away from the wrecks in the shipping channels has also turned up some great fish to 5 kg. Live baits fished at night have been popular and for the lure fisherman 5 inch z mans have been working a treat. Golden trevally, jew, blackall and a few sweetlip have also been about. Along the Island’s in the northern straits, squid can be found on the rocky outcrops with trevally and queen fish working the eddys. If you’re after a feed of winter whiting try the grounds around the Nu2 beacon, off Point Vernon and south of Round Island with live blood worms being dynamite which are available from Anglers Den.

Wide Grounds
Some good reports of snapper have come from the 25 Fathom Hole and southern gutters, coral trout, hussar, sweetlip, cobia and parrot have also been reported. Crews will make the most of the winter conditions and head over Break Sea spit if conditions allow, parrot, coronation trout, red throats, maori cod, job fish and more have been reported.

Platypus Bay
Platypus Bay has been producing its usual mix of winter species with snapper, trevally, cobia and trevally all being reported. Live baits have been working well on most species up there with soft plastics and soft vibes also getting results.

Urangan Pier
The Crew at Angers Den in Urangan have reported Spanish mackerel, jew and longtail tuna coming off the end of the Pier. In the first channel whiting and bream have been taken on yabbies and worms with some nice flathead coming in on live pike. The Beaches will also be worth a look for a bream and whiting for land based anglers, fishing at night will see better quality fish. The Rock Wall at the Urangan Harbour has been turning up some nice jew to 10 kg with lures and baits working well particularly at night.

Sandy Straits
A few chopper tailor have been coming in from around the beacons of the Straits and in the Channels. Jew have been taken on the ledges of the Island along with the mouth of the Mart River. If you are after a feed of whiting the flats along the Island have been producing a few, flathead to 80 cm being caught and released on the flats along with some nice bream.
