Report 13/08/14

Post by Nicole Penfold » Wed Aug 13, 2014 2:27 pm

After some big tides earlier in the week things should be a little easier for anglers this week with the wide grounds worth a look if conditions allow. Inshore estuary species will be worth a look also with some great fish being reported of late.

Wide Grounds
The wide grounds will be worth a look this week with snapper being a great target in the late afternoon out at the 25 fathom and southern gutters. The odd trout will also be about with lures and live baits working well. For bait fisho’s fresh cut baits have been attracting sweetlip, moses perch, hussar and snapper.

Platypus Bay
Platypus Bay fished well over the full moon period, this week it will be tougher up there. Snapper have been taken on soft vibes, micro jigs, soft plastics along with fresh baits. Cobia, trevallyscarlets and grunter have also been taking offerings meant for snapper. The beaches up there have also produced some nice whiting on the big tides with flathead also about on the coffee rock.

Uragan Pier
The big tides have produced some quality whiting on live blood worms off the Urangan Pier. The crew at Anglers Den have live blood worms available and they have been proving to be dynamite on summer and winter whiting. Bream, flathead and squid have also been reported off the pier.

Local Reefs
The local reefs have produced some nice snapper on dawn and dusk on live baits, with low tide around dark or just after this week it makes for perfect conditions to chase snapper. Blackall, golden trevally, cod and a few jew have also been coming in from the wrecks of the Artificial Reef. Around the islands in the straits squid can be found on the rocky points and bays. Trevally, queenfish and yellowtail kings can also be found around the islands as they work the eddys and the bait schools.

Sandy Straits
The straits have been fishing well with some big threadfin salmon to 120cm, flathead, tailor, bream, grunter, whiting and jew on offer. Working the ledges has been producing the jew with live baits working well. The straits and Mary system has turned up some great winter fishing for salmon with soft vibes and trolled lures working well. The flats are beginning to fire for flathead as they gather to spawn. Taking the crab pots will also be worth thinking about as there has been some good crabs about.
