Report 19/08/14

Post by Nicole Penfold » Tue Aug 19, 2014 9:57 am

Recent bad weather has limited fishing activities as the August westerlies set in for a good period, for many but for the diehard anglers fish are still about with the estuaries producing a few.

Burrum Heads
The Burrum has been popular for anglers looking to escape the wind. The upper reaches have produced some jew, tarpon and small trevally’s. Working the sand banks and ledges has produced some nice flathead with bream also about in the snags.

Urangan Pier
Recent dirty water has stirred up the whiting with some good numbers about at night coming in on live blood worms. Bream and flathead have made up other captures along with the odd longtail tuna. If you are working the local beach’s casting micro poppers on the run in tide has been producing some nice whiting.

Wide Grounds
Limited reports have come from the wide grounds, the usual suspects will be on offer if the weather allows with some good snapper being reported before the recent bad weather.

Platypus Bay
Platypus Bay has seen some mac tuna move in on the surface, late afternoon has been best with the odd long tail also up there. Snapper will continue their spawning run, tis season has seen some big fish with many over 80cm being reported. Please remember the bag limits on snapper with 4 in total and only 1 fish over 70cm allowed. Golden trevally, queenfish, cobia and blackall have also been reported.

Local Reefs
The artificial reef has been producing a few snapper for those who are trying to hide from the westerly winds. Live baits have been working the best with fresh cut bait also fairing well. For those using soft plastics big golden trevally have been annoying at times as they take your offering while targeting snapper.

Sandy Straits
The straits have seen some good flathead start to show around the mouth of the Mary River along with the flats along the western side of the island. Small soft plastics have been working the best with squidgy fish and z man curl tails being the go to lures. Bream, whting and grunter have also been taken in the creeks with some school Jew turning up in the deeper holes. Tailor have been a little hit and miss but working the channels and drop off’s with some trolled minnows has been the best way to locate the schools. Strip baits fished around the ledges of the Island has also turned up a few tailor.
