Report 12/6/15

Post by subeditor » Fri Jun 12, 2015 2:31 pm

Well May has gone in the blink of an eye and certainly was another successful month for HBFSF and our guests. Longtail tuna stuck around on the surface creating some great opportunities on top water lures. Longtail's will continue to be caught through winter but are often caught deeper in the water column, targeting them around the yakka schools sinking plastics down with a medium burn retrieve can be great fun during the cooler months, and can also turn up plenty of bycatch, this can also be done with saltwater fly tackle.

As we move into winter snapper will become more frequent as the water temps drop, currently the water temp is sitting around 21c in the Northern Bay, as we see it drop further to around 19c this will see conditions improve to suit snapper as they move in to spawn and gorge on the yakka schools.

Other captures over May were queenfish, golden trevally, spanish mackerel, cod, coral trout, mac tuna, various trevallys, sweetlip, squid and more.

Looking ahead toward June, July and August we will see increase in snapper as I have mentioned, targeting golden trevally, diamond trevally, brassy trevally and queenfish is great fun in the deeper water using soft plastics and micro jigs. There will be the odd tuna on the surface as we chase the tuna schools south on their migration. With our Humpback Whale season starting in July close encounters will be had while fishing our great waters, this really adds to a great experience for my guests that have never seen big marine mammals in the wild.

If you are after a family escape we can help arrange your accommodation staying at Mantra Hervey Bay or the Boat Harbour Resort , Fraser Island day trips along with great rates on whale watching tours on board Freedom III Whale Watch can all be arranged . http://freedomwhalewatch.com.au/

I still have dates available in June and July, if you are interested in doing some winter sportfishing please be drop an email fishing@herveybaysportfishing.com.au or by phone 0407 627 852.
