Report 20/7/15

Post by Nicole Penfold » Mon Jul 20, 2015 1:54 pm

We finally had a bit of a break in the weather with some great days mid week which allowed anglers to get in a few mid week sessions. It looks like we will have some more southerly’s to kick off school holidays so let’s hope for a break later in the week.

Up the Burrum River species like trevally, bream, flathad, grunter and whiting can be found throughout the system. Out the front of the 8 mile a few snapper have been reported with the 12 mile also worth a look. Floating whole pilchards down a beryl trail has been successful. Diver whiting can also be found out the front with Berkley gulp worms being a great alternative to fresh bait.

Wide Grounds
On the wide grounds coral trout, sweetlip, snapper, hussar ad cod have been reported from the southern gutters. The 25 fathom hole has fished well for snapper with some good captures reported but sharks have been a problem at times. Over Break Sea spit the usual reef species have been reported along with some good sessions on Spanish mackerel.

Local Reefs
Some nice snapper have been coming off the local reefs with the artificial reef producing a mixed bag at present. Snapper, Jew, coral trout, cod and sweetlip have been captures from that area. Mac tuna can also be found in the shipping channels and provide great sport. If you are after a feed of squid hitting the rocky points on the islands should see some success, also around the islands trevally, queen fish and small snapper ca be found which are great fun on light tackle.

Urangan Pier
The crew at Anglers Den have reported bream, flathead and whiting being the main captures in the first channel with an excellent run of bream also being had deeper in the second channel. Squid can be found hanging around the pylons and have been taking squid jigs readily. Out towards the end golden trevally, queenfish and tuna have been taken on like baits.

Sandy Straits
In the straits Jew are now on local anglers minds as we are now well into winter, targeting Jew at the mouth of the Mary River can turn up some great captures other hot spots are Kingfisher Bay and the ledge from Kingfisher Jetty to Mackenzie Jetty, Ungowa and the Arty. Live whiting, herring and mullet are always great baits but also trying some soft vibes, soft plastics and prawn imitation lures will get results. Mud Crabs are still about in the creeks with some great bream fishing also being had in the creeks of the straits. Targeting the rocky points around South Head has also turned up some good bream with lure anglers getting some great success on the squidgy wrigglers.
