Report Thur 25th May 06

The local fishos will be pleased, as we have had a few reports that the winter whiting have finally come in at Gatakers Bay - on the drift over the schools is proving to be the best method. It’s great to see people not taking the copious amounts we have seen in the past, and you’ll see the benefits of that. The winteries have some good size to them this year. They are also still being caught south of Big Woody at the moment.

The mackerel are still around the beacons especially the North Cardinal Mark. Both broad barred and school mackerel are hanging around. A trolled lure or a spin with chrome slugs is working best, although they will take a ganged pillie.

Snapper are coming on strong with this colder weather change, with the top end of the Artificial Reef being a hot spot at the moment. Soft plastics in the slack of the tides is a different way of fishing for the snapper, and once you try it you won’t go back!

The tailor are on at the moment. A 4kg specimen being the largest weighed in at the comp. The night tides are attracting the bigger ones.
There are some great gutters all along the eastern beaches and bream and tarwhine are stacked inside them all. They are getting caught as far south as Pyungan Rocks and as far north as Waddy Point.

Jew are around the rocks at Waddy and Indian Head, with a 12kg whopper being weighed in at the comp.

Whiting are getting caught on the low tides - a half kilo fish was released.
Flathead are being caught mostly on the western side from Moon Point to Kingfisher.

The beaches are very up and down at the moment due to the higher tides so take it easy while travelling.
