Guests lap up the February action

Another fantastic month has been and gone with our guests enjoying some fantastic fishing again this February. The weather was typical for this time of year with fresh south easterlies, we managed to fit in 20 days for the month with only a few days lost due to weather which was fantastic for February.

Looking forward, we will see an increase in longtail tuna activity as they migrate into the bay. Queenfish, broad bar mackerel, mac tuna and others have also been trickling in as they do this time of year. Some good surface bites were experienced over the past few weeks this action will continue into March and April.

The past month we had a few cool captures like Benny’s big 25 kg Spanish mackerel which was his biggest fish to date and taken on a soft plastic.
We also had some great fly fishing moments with Colin landing some great fish including a few longtails on the flats in skinny water less than 4 feet deep. The fishery we have is truly unique, particularly with the northern flats where anything can turn up at any time.

Peter Morse also joined me for a few days fly fishing testing a few new Sage products. We had a ball getting a dozen or more mac tuna, longtails and a nice flats golden. We found a big ray with a bunch of big 100lb cobia and a school of goldens on it. We only managed the goldys as the cobia would not eat. Seeing such big fish on the flats is always exciting. Peter got a great flats longtail which put up a great battle and a good test for the Sage gear. The rod we used was the Pike 10 wt, it was a great rod you can check out the full range on Sage's website

In other news we have commissioned Hooker Boats in cairns to start on our newest guide boat. The new vessel will be a 6.8 hooker centre console powered by a 200hp Yamaha four stroke. This should make those choppy days much easier when heading across the bay and will get us there quicker. exciting times ahead there will be plenty happening over the next few months here at HBFSF.

If you are after a warm change from the southern states this winter, be sure to get in early for our great winter season. Targeting species like golden trevally, snapper, queenfish, longtail tuna and mackerel in the winter months is great fun, catching tropical species right next to snapper is certainly one of the things that make Hervey Bay so special . We also see the best weather of the year over the winter period with stunning afternoon glass outs.
