Report 5/8/16

Post by subeditor » Fri Aug 05, 2016 1:55 pm

July is done and dusted for another year, this July we saw some great snapper fishing making the 2016 season another great one. Our guests enjoyed some hot sessions with the bite periods being short but intense. Once again soft plastics worked well but we also had success with prawn imitations and micro jigs.

The snapper this time of year come in to spawn and feed up on the yakka schools. Working the yakka schools with our offerings has been working for us with the odd tuna also in the mix holding deep on the yakka.

Some mixed reef also came aboard with scarlets, winter coral trout, cod and sweetlip taking our offerings while targeting snapper. Mixed trevally species including golden trevally, tea leaf trevally, bludger trevally, diamond trevally and others also kept angler's busy.

Down the Sandy Straits on the blown out days, we targeted golden trevally, queenfish, broad bar mackerel, trevally and flathead. Anglers enjoyed the scenery of the Sandy Straits which gave them some calm water fishing, on days that we just couldn’t fish the bay comfortably.

Reports of small black marlin were about earlier in the month with Sunshine Coast crews getting into them outside Break Sea Spit. I managed a day outside a week or so latter targeting them, but we missed our opportunities. It’s certainly interesting to hear good numbers at this time of the year and certainly asks the question, is there another spawning run on the Barrier Reef other than off Cairns?

We are gearing up for another season of small blacks as we speak, and are looking forward to the late spring run that we usually get each year on the inside of Fraser Island. If you want to get into the action we still have some dates left over the prime months, please be in touch ASAP for rates and dates. fishing@herveybaysportfishing.com.au
