Report 29/9/16

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri Sep 30, 2016 10:01 am

September has quickly disappeared and with it so has the cooler weather. We are now well into our spring patterns with northerly winds being the norm. This has raised water temps up to 23 c in most parts of the bay. Mac tuna schools are starting to flow in along with long tail tuna in smaller numbers. School and grey mackerel can be found in good numbers for those looking for a feed of mackerel. There has even been some late season snapper sessions. As we move into October, an increase in pelagic activity will be happening with bulk mac tuna yet to arrive. Small Black Marlin will also be not too far away. with reports of fish being caught outside. Deeper in the water column various trevallys have kept anglers busy with some big golden’s about. We also scored some cracking longtail tuna to 20 kg over September, which has given guests some epic battles on light tackle.

Spring time snapper a welcome catch.

Both myself and Murray have been busy guiding over September with both boats working most days. September is always a buzz for us as he school holidays gets lots of kids out bending a rod and learning about the outdoors. A highlight over the school holiday period for me, was watching 9 year old Bailey a regular guest of ours along with his Dad Paul land his first longtail tuna. His knowledge of fish species and lure choice is coming along nicely, and with his Dad’s guidance he will be also learning the art of fly fishing very soon i'm sure.

For Murray his highlight for September was guiding Ben Simm’s from Victoria onto a oversize golden trevally, the big golden would have gone 15 kg as it’s girth right through to its tail was incredible. Congrats to Ben on a great fish and great guiding by Murray.

We have one spot left on one of our Mother Shipping trips in 2017. The dates for this particular trip will be April 10,11,12,13, which is 4 days fishing in prime longtail tuna season. Other species this time of year include queenfish, golden trevally, cobia,Spanish mackerel, various reef fish and other trevallys plus more Included in this package will be all meals cooked by a on board chef, along with guiding on board our 18 ft guide boats.
