A Stella Winter Season So Far
Snapper catches this year were down slightly on previous years but we managed to find some good ones in the mix. Longtail tuna, golden trevally, diamond trevally, pennant trevally, bonefish, kingfish, mackerels, cobia, sweetlip, cod and more were caught during trips in July. With 3 guides out daily we have certainly been covering some water, with guides communicating regularly during the day this gives us a fantastic advantage.

With water temps up slightly we had a bumper school mackerel season. We had great sessions for those looking for a feed or beginners after the thrill of mackerel chasing your lure to the rod tip. They can be a little bit of a pest at times when targeting other species but when targeted properly they can be a ton of fun. We also found some big Spanish mackerel amongst the schoolies along with longtail and mac tuna.
Mac tuna will begin to work the surface as we move closer to spring.

The early part of July saw the better snapper fishing with some good fish to 84 cm measured on the mat. It was great to see so many guests wanting to release their snapper which is great for the fishery in years ahead. Again the zman soft plastic range produced the goods with most of our fish coming on electric chicken and coconut ice colours.

The weeks ahead

As we move into August we may see a late run of snapper if we get a drop in the water temp. Mac tuna and longtail will soon begin on the surface as the small bait arrives. Also fishing deep for tuna will be effective as the yakka schools start to move out. Golden trevally will start to move closer to the island and big flathead will also be abundant on the sand flats. Season changes will start to take place as we see a bit more of a blast from the south west during August before the south easterly's in September come in. This time of year is always exciting as we know season change is not far away.

Hervey Bay Bonefish

We have had quite a few bonefish caught this winter with anglers getting a bit of a surprise when they come aboard. Bonefish are a prized fly and sport fish around the world and are a fairly rare catch on the east cost of Australia. We are slowly learning a bit more about their habits in the bay as we take notes when we encounter them, and are beginning to see a pattern.
We tagged this bone that Bryson caught for research, you never know it may get recaptured again someday.

Spring Season is Upon us

Our popular spring season is nearly here with our migration of small black marlin beginning in the next few months. The shallow waters and flats of Fraser Island is now a world renowned location for targeting small black marlin on the flats. If you are after a piece of this world class fishing along with targeting longtail, mac tuna, spotted mackerels, golden trevally, queenfish and more, drop us a email for rates and dates. We have dates available for both spin and fly fisherman.
