Report 8/2/18

Post by Nicole Penfold » Mon Feb 12, 2018 3:32 pm

With the recent rain we have had, this has only fired up the condition of the local river systems and has improved the fishing.

Both the Baffle and Kolan have really improved with a lot of flathead, bream and grunter all hanging around the areas towards the mouths. A few reported mangrove jack and barra have also been caught in a few of the deeper holes and along the rock bars.

There is plenty of small to medium river prawns about both of these systems, and it will be well worth your efforts, so don’t forget your cast net.

The trusty old Burnett River is also fishing well and with the recent rains flushing out all the bait, prawns and crabs from their usual spots and pushing them all into the main stream of the river, this seems to be the areas to target the larger species while they are feeding on this bait.

Some solid catches of big bream, grunter and a few king salmon have all been reported, mainly by fishing the main channel drop-offs throughout the river.

There are still a few nice sand whiting and flathead on the sand flats, mainly on the evening making tides. There is also plenty of prawns and crabs about, making it definitely worth the time and effort as they are all of quality size.

The Elliott River has fished well, mainly around the mouth for whiting and dart. There appears to be a few prawns and crabs about this system also.

Both of the local dams have produced some great fishing sessions, with Lake Gregory fishing well for bass. Most of the bass have come from the weed edges with most of the bigger bass being caught in Spinnerbaits or Chatterbaits.

Lake Monduran is still producing barra, with most being caught up in the “B” Section of the dam. It is still the smaller suspending lures such as Jackall Squirrels and Lucky Craft Pointers doing the damage.
