Last weekend saw the annual Win Television Monduran Family Fishing Classic. Although the weather was a little bit windy, it didn't deter the keen anglers with about 650 people competing for the cash and prizes. Plenty of bass and barra were caught this year, which is excellent.

Monduran is still fishing well with good numbers of barra to 85cm being caught on a day out, with the new Tropic Angler lures doing well, as are the Barra Classic 120's. Bass are being landed by trolling Bass Vipers.

On the river there has been some top quality grunter to 57cm and some massive bream. Sprat seem to be a favoured bait.

Flathead still seem to be everywhere. Drifting and jigging plastics along the rock walls and sand flats should be successful. Around the river mouths some mackerel are still about, and trolling small chrome lures and pillies are the best methods.

Reef fishing has been excellent during the breaks in the wind with some huge black king to 40kgs taking live bait, with Spanish mackerel thrown in as well. As for the reef species, some big red emperor and spangled emperor, parrot, sweetlip and some good quality trout have been taken.

Please remember the next reef closure is a few weeks away, so keep an eye on the dates.

Best breezes,
Tim Mulhall
