Signs of a good summer are starting to show with some great reports of mangrove jack, fingermark, trumpeter and cod coming from most rivers in the Bundaberg area. Most have been taken by mid-depth lures or on live baits fished across the turning of the tides. The best mangrove jack measured in-store last week was 60cm, with a great deal over 50cm. Flathead have moved more into the mid to upper reaches of most rivers and are currently taking plastics from 8-12 size readily. A few dart are also showing up along Coonarr and Norval beaches, however weed is
making the fishing difficult.
Offshore fishing has been dominated by the winds but a two-day window late last week provided anglers with some good coral trout and black king. Crabs and prawns are better but we still need more rain to bring catches up to a normal year.
Local dams have also been fishing well for both bass and barra. Bass have been falling to dawn poppers and spinnerbaits while the barra have mainly shifted into water 3-15 feet deep. Lure depth will relate to whether you are casting or trolling.
Until next time,
Ben Shorten
