Weekly Report 29 Feb 08

Post by Brad » Fri Feb 29, 2008 3:52 pm

Wind will rule the weekend yet again, forcing most of us to fish the estuaries or impoundments. On a brighter note, the rivers have picked up well with solid reports filtering in from everywhere. The Burnett, Kolan, Burrum Rivers and Baffle Creek are all fishing well for big bream, which are moving up into the mid sections of the rivers feeding on the jelly prawn. Bream up to 40cm and weighing over a kilo have not been uncommon. Cod are also been taken with the bream and are a welcome addition to any bag.

Round Hill Creek and Middle Creek have been producing some great jacks over the past week and word has it that strip baits have been best by far. A few barra have also been taken on slow trolled lures in the deeper holes. Big live mullet have also been caught on the turn of the tides. The weather last weekend let the offshore angler have a go and most had brilliant catches. Many boats that left from 1770 had reached their bag limits on several reef species. Coral trout, sweetlip, parrot and red jew were all hungry. The closer reefs showed some early snapper and trumpeter after dark. The run up to the next moon should see these species improve more. Wider grounds and the outer reefs have had good shows of Spanish. These should move closer to shore over the next three weeks. Small yellowfin have been popping up both off Bundaberg and 1770.

Monduran has fished well for most of the past week but has gone quite today. Best chance will be on Sunday as this sou-easterly change settles in. Cania dam fished well last weekend and should continue to fish well for the next month or so. A regular customer caught over 40 bass and two saratoga last weekend by fishing light coloured spinnerbaits over the freshly flooded areas. Well, fingers crossed for lighter winds next week end and best of luck for this one.
Cheers … Ben Shorten
