Weekly Report 7 Jul 09

Post by Brad » Tue Jul 07, 2009 1:47 pm

In the local areas around Bundaberg, we have seen a constant run of good weather that has allowed most of us to head to the offshore grounds. The fishing has been red hot with most reef species being caught. Good numbers of coral trout, red emperor, sweetlip, cod, hussar and plenty more have been reported. Some of the deeper ledges have seen some schools of big snapper and big cobia. Spanish mackerel have also been caught in these areas, using big flesh baits rigged on 8/0 or 9/0 hooks. Fish hard on the bottom and hang on! The smaller species can be caught on a patanoster (snapper) rig, also fished on the bottom. Size 5/0 hooks are fine for this.

The inshore grounds have also produced some good snapper, sweetlip and big grunter, as well as some big school mackerel. The local rivers have also been the place for some red hot fishing. The recent VMR Family Fishing competition produced some excellent fish, with a record number of nominations this year. Big bream to 1.3kg were caught, and some monster summer whiting, flathead and a host of other species were also landed. The early morning tides proved the best for fishing. The river mouths produced some good catches as well, for tuna, trevally, mackerel and big tailor. Trolling spoons or diving Minnows produced the best results.

The local dams have still been producing some good bass around the weed edges. The barra in Monduran have also come on the bite around the weed beds. Slow rolling soft plastics has produced some big barra.
