Report 11th Jan 06

The barra at Monduran have been a hot topic this week with some excellent captures being reported. One stand-out capture was a 1.1 metre barra caught out of the timber by a young gun, and he did very well to land it.

Gary Leather from Salty's, and son Nathan, fished with John Hutton earlier in the week and landed ten barra, and missed another seven due to bust-ups, jump-offs, etc. The boys were getting the barra in about 20 feet of water while trolling 10-15 feet diving lures.

In the rivers there are some excellent quality bream, and in good numbers, with some pushing 1kg plus. Small live prawns and sprat have been the favoured baits. Mixed in with the bream have been some good jack, cod and thicklip bream. There are still good numbers of king salmon in the river for those using live baits. Poddy mullet and big prawns are a favourite bait. While using the live baits, you will have to put up with the sharks, as the river and coastline are full of them at the moment. Baby hammerheads and river whalers are around, but these little guys aren't bad chewing, so don't be afraid to take one home for a feed.

Offshore, the pelagics are moving about with some big Spanish mackerel and trevally being caught. The reefies are on the chew as well, with some good reds, trout, cod and sweetlip all being landed this week.

This weekend is shaping up to be a good one, so get out there and do it!

Best breezes,
