Weekly Report 1 Jun 10

Post by Brad » Tue Jun 01, 2010 12:14 pm

We have had a great run of good weather this week which really suited those who had the opportunity to have the time off from work. Those who headed offshore were well rewarded, not only with calm weather but some great fishing as well. With the smaller tides that are now with us, you will be able to fish some of the deep water towards the shelf. A lot of big red emperor have been caught in these area with most of the reds being between 10 and 15kgs which are top class fish. The rigs to catch a big red is easy. Use a 10 ball sinker to a swivel, a length of mono trace and 2 @ 9/0 hooks with a big flesh bait fished hard on the bottom and then hang on. All other areas fished well for reefies, sweetlip, cod, trout, parrot and the usual mixed species. There is still a good number of spanish mackerel and cobia in these areas too.

The Artificial Reef has been producing some excellent fishing with some large snapper, grunter and red jew being caught. The river mouths are still producing some top quality fish such as winter whiting, school mackerel and tailor. The rivers are also still producing good numbers of bream, whiting and flathead with some good jew, cod, jack and salmon being caught in the deeper holes using live baits. There is still a run of crabs and prawns.

Bass are still being caught in reasonable numbers with spinnerbaits still the most popular choice. Barra are still a bit quite so look for a sun-warmed bay out of the wind and try using some soft plastics.
Till next time,
