Weekly Report 25 Aug 10

Post by Brad » Wed Aug 25, 2010 10:01 am

This week in the Bundaberg area we have had some great reports coming in from our offshore anglers, who tell us that they have been able to fill their ice-boxes with a mixture of reef species. On the outer reefs sweetlip, parrot, hussar and red emperor have been filling the creels, and the occassional spanish mackeral is still patrolling around these outer reefs. The closer inshore reefs and gutters are producing some nice sized snapper up to about 5kg. Along the foreshores there are still some tailor and a good number of school mackeral being captured. Floating pilchards or trolling Spoons or Flasha lures have been the best methods.

In the local river systems flathead are still the main topic of conversation between anglers. Small soft plastics and hard-bodied lures worked across the shallow sand flats have been producing most fish. Large bream have been taken along the rock walls in the Burnett River, as well as salmon being captured in the deeper holes at night. A few guys have been getting amongst the scattered large banana prawns around the port area, although they have had to work fairly hard to get themselves a nice feed.

On the freshwater scene bass are still being captured early morning on surface lures in our local impoundments, including Lake Gregory, and a few barra have come on the chew at Lake Monduran with soft plastics being the favourite. Recently I spent a morning at Bucca Retreat with the Year 12 classes from Bundy High. They were all keen to test out their recently learnt techniques on the bass which have been stocked in the dam that at the retreat. The kids were up at 4.00am and on the water before sun-up to catch themselves a fish on surface lures. I was lucky enough to be fishing with Jacinta Kenzler who managed to land a nice 37cm bass. Thanks go to Bucca Retreat staff for looking after us on the day.
Till next time, Gary Leather Tackle World Bundaberg Fishing Team
