Weekly Report 4 Nov 2010

Post by Brad » Thu Nov 04, 2010 7:10 pm

Well, we have finally cracked a few days of good weather, but we are now left with a Coral Reef Finfish closure which came into place in Wednesday, 3rd November and will be effective until midnight on Sunday, 7th November. This means we will have to stick to the local rivers, creeks and dams for the weekend, and the tops of the tides around the river mouths will be a good place to start. There is still a good run of mackerel, tuna and bonito and floating out a pilly unweighted or a small livie is the best method. Trolling lures is also a favourite, and the Predator Vibe lures trolled at 6 or 7 knots is a deadly technique. The breakwalls are fishing well for big bream, cod, flathead and grunter with soft plastics being the preferred way to catch these species, and the Berkley Gulp being the pick of plastics.

Up river in the Burnett, some great captures have been made with some of the deeper holes producing jack, cod and salmon – both blue and king. Live-baiting seems to be the go with these fish. There has also been some small barra caught in the river, but please remember we are now in a barra closure. This closure goes from midday on the 1st of November until midday until the 1st of February, so if you do catch a barra during these times, get a quick photo for the album, then release the fish. There is a small sprinkling of prawns in the local rivers at the moment. They are still a bit small, but give them a few weeks and they should be good. Also, there is still the odd mud crab about. The odd barra has been taken in Lake Monduran and the best results have been by fishing the weeded points with soft plastics such a Slick Rigs and Hollowbellys, slowly fished back to the boat. The average size of the Monduran barra is about one metre long. Till next time, Tim Mulhall Tackle World Bundaberg Fishing Team :D
