Weekly Report 24 Dec 11

Post by Brad » Sat Dec 24, 2011 3:10 pm

The rains over the past few weeks have seen some fresh come down the local creeks and rivers. Hopefully it won’t last for long. The fresh had the mud crabs fired up and running up and down the river so dust of the pots and get them in. Most people have been crabbing with mullet as bait. The fishing is still great with most species being caught. Some snodger bream have been caught with some measuring 40cm. There is still a good number of big grunter about. Live prawns and sprats have been the go for these fish. Some of the deeper holes throughout the Burnett River have been producing some big jack, cod and an odd king salmon on live poddy mullet and mullet fillets.

Offshore fishing has been very limited due to the windy weather, but hopefully one day that will stop! I suppose it has given us a chance to do some trailer maintenance, at least.

The local dams are well on the improve, with the Isis Impoundment (Lake Gregory) producing some great bass sessions. Lake Monduran is also starting to fish well for barra, although they are only small. Barras 45 to 75cm sure are fun to catch though, and by downsizing your gear to lighter stuff, you sure will catch more. It would pat to even use small lures. A few of the best lures for these small barra at the moment are the Strada Trakkas 100, Junior B52s, Jackall Tranzams and Squirrels. Until next time, Tim Mulhall
