Report Wed 1st Mar 06

1/3/06
Another weekend of ordinary weather made sure the reef fishermen remained in the estuaries or on land last week. This weekend is not looking any better with predictions of rain and more strong winds.

The last reports from the reef were catches of Spanish mackerel and yellowfin tuna on the close inshore reefs. On the outer reefs there have been reports of red emperor, large sweetlip and parrot.

For the lucky fishermen who have managed to wet a line in the estuary there were good catches of whiting, bream and trumpeter. With such large tides this week it would be an ideal opportunity to set a few crab pots and it should also increase the chances of netting a catch of prawns. Please keep in mind the legal limit for prawns is a 10ltr bucket in your possession at any one time. Another thing to remember when cast-netting is the closure in the town reach.

Bart, Tim and Gary have been to Brisbane this week for a conference catching up with the latest news and releases of sounders and electric motors. While they were there they were fortunate enough to have the privilege to fish Somerset Dam with Tim Morgan and managed to land nine bass in the 2-hour session.

As mentioned last week, we had ten local anglers compete in the ABT Bass Electric at Lenthalls Dam near Maryborough. Congratulations to Shane Anderson who managed third place with his two fish and has now qualified for the Grand Final later in the year. It was a quiet day on the dam with 41 anglers and only 47 legal fish weighed in. Adriam Kampf finished in tenth place with his two fish but had managed to land 37 fish during the six hour session. Unfortunately most of the fish were below regulation size. Other placings of our locals were Nathan Leather - 17th, Damine Leather - 22nd, and Gary Leather - 25th. All weighed in one fish each on the day.

The next round of the ABT Bass Electric is being held at our local Lake Gregory - Isis Balancing Storage on Sunday 12th March. We look forward to our local anglers placing high in this round.

Best breezes,
Gary Leather
