Weekly Report 10 Feb 12

The flow down the Burnett River from the recent rains is starting to slow down and a bit of salty water is starting to push back up river, and so are the fish. There has been a good number of bream about, mainly around the rocky areas. Some great catches of big barra and king threadfin have been caught around most of the local river mouths on both lures and live baits. There is still a run of prawns about – they are still a bit small, but tasty all the same. The weather earlier in the week saw the chance for a lot of boats to head offshore and the fish seemed to be on the chew. Most of the outer reefs and island produced some big reds, coral trout and red-throat sweetlip. The gutters also produced some beaut catches with some big trout, parrot and grass sweetlip being caught. Some big cobia and spanish mackerel have been caught by trolling big baits and lures.

I recently had a fishing session out at the Isis Impundment (Lake Gregory) and caught some great bass on Jackalls and small Blades. Most of the fish have been schooled up in the deeper water, so locate the schools of bass on your sounder and get stuck into them. The best retrieve I found was a few quick rips of the handle and a pause, then a few more rips of the handle – known as burn and kill. Worked a treat, as bass love a
fast lure.
