Weekly Report 28 Jun 12

The past week has seen some fantastic fishing around Bundaberg, both offshore and in the estuaries. The guys who got a chance to head offshore were well rewarded with some monster red emperor, cod, coral trout, big sweetlip and a good bag of the usual mixed reef fish. The key to catching the bigger fish is to use big baits, with the best baits being whole mullet fillets rigged on some big 9/0 or 10/0 hooks. Drop it to the bottom and hang on! Also out wide are some big cobia and spanish mackerel, with lures and big live baits being best the best baits to use.

At the moment the local rivers and creeks are fishing red hot, with big bream being the favourite target species. Some of these bream are over one kilogram in weight and they are up to 35cm and 43 cm long. The bait fishermen have been nailing them on mullet filets and chook gut while the lure fishermen have been getting them on blades and soft plastics with Gulp and Atomic plastics being the best. There are also plenty of flathead about the sand flats with soft plastics again being favourites. There are also plenty of other species being caught to liven up your fishing day, with species such as trevally, queenfish, tailor, salmon and even the odd jack or barra. Mud crabs are still on the menu with plenty still about. They seem to be best on big tides.

Bass fishing at the Isis Impoundment (Lake Gregory) is still good with bass being caught in the middle of the dam. Blades and Jackalls are by far the best lures to use.
Good fishing,
Tim Mulhall
