Report Tues 14th Mar 06

14/3/06
Last weekend another round of the ABT Bass Electric Tournament was held at our local Isis Impoundment on Childers Road. This round was fished by 25 anglers with our local boys featuring in top placings. Dale Smith was first with a bag of 2.5kg and in second was Scott (Banana) Bromley who also won biggest fish for the day with a 1.25kg bass. Shane Anderson seems to be stuck in third after finishing the last two comps in this place. Another local, Shane Davis placed fifth and many other locals also weighed in fish for lower placings. Unfortunately, our own Gary (Donut King) Leather and his boys were unlucky on the day and were unable to weigh in a fish. Lures that were successful for our top anglers on the day were Bassman Spinnerbaits, Daiwa Pro Vibe Chartreuse/Clear 70mm and Tilsan Bass lures. The next round of this tournament will be held at Lenthalls Dam on the 2nd July, 2006. Congratulations to all our anglers.

On the local estuary scene, we have had reports of large trumpeter up to 5kg and jewfish to 6kg being caught in the Burnett. Baits of live poddy mullet and sprat are the best options for catching these larger fish. Bream are still being caught in numbers as well as flathead. The whiting have been elusive but these fish should start to appear in numbers fairly soon.

For the reef fishermen the past week provided plenty of time for catching up on maintenance on boats and trailers, with strong winds and high seas forecast once again. Hopefully the winds will be lighter this weekend and allow our keen fishermen some quality catches.

Lake Monduran has still been producing good sized barra. Gary managed a day fishing where they hooked five and landed two with the biggest being 92cm. With the water temperature dropping the barra are now heading back to the shallows. Gary found casting to the waters edge and slowly retrieving the lure back to the boat with short, sharp twitches produced the best results. The lure that produced the goods was the Reidy’s B52.

Also on the freshwater scene, this weekend is the annual Cania Dam Fishing Classic at Monto, from 7.30am on Saturday, 18th until 12.30pm on Sunday, 19th March. There are plenty of lucky draws over the weekend and prizes for all species. Matt from Salty's will be fishing this competition so we will have all the news next week.

Best breezes,
Gary Leather
