Weekly Report 13 Feb 14

Post by Brad » Thu Feb 13, 2014 6:46 pm

Finally, the wind around the Bundaberg area looks like it might give the big boats a chance to sweep out wide in the next few days. There are still a few reports of good Spanish mackerel and reef fishing with most boats bagging out on mixed reef and pelagic species in the few opportunities that were had over the past month. Now that we're in the second week of the barra season, all keen barra anglers have been doing really well. If you've never caught a barra, now is the prime time to target them in all the local rivers, both on lures and bait.

The Burnett River has been fishing fantastically well. There have been reports of threadfin salmon, grunter, jacks and the odd barra chasing the huge amount of bait throughout the system. Anglers who put in the hours around dawn and dusk and who fish the tide changes have been doing well.

The Kolan River in both the salt and the freshwater has been another great option. Good numbers of barra have been coming from both sections of the river. Fishing both hard-body lures and soft plastics have been doing the trick. The prawns have been a little patchy but once located, seem to be a better size also. It's also been worth putting a few pots out with reports of some muddies being caught lately.

The Elliott River has seen some huge whiting, bream and flathead caught throughout the past week. There are still good numbers of prawns in the upper reaches. As the Elliott is a series of shallow sand bars it is ideal for lure fishermen. Soft plastics and hard-bodied lures and even surface lures have been top fun. Finally, with the full moon on Saturday night, it's looking like a top weekend for all forms of fishing so get out there and have a go.
Good fishing,
Dale Smith
