Report 14/08/14

Post by Nicole Penfold » Thu Aug 14, 2014 1:49 pm

During the past week all of the local estuaries around the Bundaberg area have been fishing very well, but at this stage it looks like this coming weekend will be wet. With some welcome rain forecast, Friday night and Saturday are expected to produce falls of up to 50mm with the front clearing some time on Sunday. Let’s hope the weather man is correct and our local farmers and the rain water tanks see some much-needed rain.

Up in the Baffle, Roger from the Baffle Creek Caravan Park has reported some good catches of jewies, bream and flathead. Some of the hot lures for the jewies were Jackall Tranzams and soft plastics, cast into the deeper holes and ledges in the creek.

The Kolan River is still on fire for lure fishermen. Once again jewies (mulloway), flathead up to 70cm, bream, tailor and queenfish have been providing fantastic sport fishing for everyone wanting to experiment with soft plastics. A few stand out lures have been the 4” Swimming Mullet in pearl and green prawn, as well as most colours in the 3” Zman Minnows rigged on Fuse 1/4oz 3/0 jigheads.

The hot topic in the Burnett River at the moment has been the blue salmon. Fish up to a metre have been smashing both baits and lures very well. These fish can be targeted from the Port right up the river through to the town reaches. As well as salmon, a few nice grunter seem to be schooled up with them as well. Local guys from the Across the Waves Fishing Club weighed in some nice fish on their last outing.

Tackle World team member, Shane Anderson fished Lake Gregory last weekend and had a good session landing a few bass, targeting the edges using lightly weighted soft plastics. It seems like the fish that were schooled up have dispersed back into the weeded edges. A few fish were in the high 40’s, so Lake Gregory is another good option for a fishing session.

Fish with confidence,

Dale Smith
