Report 8/12/14

Post by subeditor » Mon Dec 08, 2014 10:49 am

During the past week in the Bundaberg region there has been a lot of good reports from the local rivers and the shallow reefs offshore. Unfortunately it looks like the wind will cancel any offshore action this weekend, so I recommend targeting our local rivers for species such as mangrove jack and flathead which have both been caught in good numbers lately.

The Baffle has seen some quality mangrove jack caught from the mouth up as far as the ferry crossing. Casting soft plastics and hard body lures, and using well-presented baits has been doing the damage. Also, around the mouth nice whiting, bream and flathead are being caught and around the first hour of the run-in tide has been the most productive.

The Kolan River is also fishing and crabbing well. The prawns are just starting to show up. They are still small at the moment but over the coming weeks should definitely be worth a go. Once again, anglers have been targeting rock bars and structure with live-baiting reaping the rewards, catching solid estuary cod and jack up to 60cm.

The Burnett River has been hard to drive past lately. The quality of fish we keep seeing is outstanding. Mangrove jack to 70cm, massive flathead and cod, and good numbers of grunter and other species are keeping local fishermen very busy. Hard body lures close to the bottom along the many rock bars have working well, along with bait fishing in the deeper holes in the Burnett. Most of the better class of fish are coming after dark - using live mullet or strips of flesh has been the key.

At Lake Monduran In the past few weeks the barra have come on the chew. In most reports the fish have taken 4” to 6” soft plastics, still fishing the shallow points with wind and current flow pushing onto them, so hopefully the barra action continues on into the New Year.

Fish with confidence,
Dale Smith
