Report 8/2/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Jan 08, 2015 10:46 am

At this stage, the weather around the Bundaberg area looks like it will be alright this weekend. Winds are expected to be under 15 knots from the south-east, so it should be a great chance to get out and wet a line.

The Burnett River has fished extremely well over the past week. We’ve heard good reports of large fingermark and mangrove jack taking live baits around the mouth. Threadfin salmon have been caught around the port and deeper holes in the river, as well as quality grunter and monster flathead caught around the many sand bars in this fantastic river.

The prawns have really taken off in the last week as well. Most people seem to be getting their limit without too much hard work. It’s still worth putting in a few pots as there are a few nice muddies being caught as well.

The Kolan River is also prawning well. On the fishing side, flathead, grunter and mangrove jack are the three main species being caught. Fishing one of its many rock bars with a live prawn or poddy mullet is sure to bring success.

Some good reports have also come in from the Elliott River. There have been some massive whiting caught on poppers fishing the shallows. Some big flathead have also been caught whilst targeting the whiting. Jacks and prawns have been caught in good numbers further upstream,

Offshore, some nice snapper, nannygai and big grunter have been caught at the Cochrane Artificial Reef and other reefs just out from Bundaberg. There are still good numbers of mackeral caught on all popular marks with the Five Degree patch holding some good numbers of spanish mackeral.

On the freshwater scene at both Lake Gregory and Lake Monduran, the fishing is a little quiet but should pick up over the coming months. Anglers putting in the effort are being rewarded with some fantastic barra up around the 90cm mark, mainly fishing at night.

Fish with confidence,
Dale Smith
