Report Wed 3rd Apr 06

Post by Brad » Wed May 03, 2006 9:16 pm

Last week saw another top week with some great weather allowing a lot of bigger boats to head offshore and most did very well with some top class fish. We have heard of red emperor up to 12kg, some big knobby snapper to 6 and 7 kg, some coral trout to 8kg and one boat caught eleven trout on some of the wider grounds.

The inshore reefs produced very well also with some just legal red jew, some grassy sweetlip, some squire and big grunter (javelin fish). There's also been a lot of big school mackerel in these areas. Jigging chrome lures off the bottom or floating pillies out the back has been a favoured method.

Back in around the river mouths has seen a few good school mackerel and some big grey mackerel. Trolling spoons or Flasha lures has proved deadly. We're also getting reports of some good tailor with one going 4kg - that's very good for tailor.

The river is also fishing the best it has in ages with big numbers and huge bream being caught on lures and dead baits. There has been a lot of bream in the 700-800grm range, which are top fish. There's also heaps of whiting and flathead about with a lot of flathead being over their maximum size of 70cm. One was reported at 91cm and these all went back. Some good dart and salmon have been running along the beaches as well.

The bass are starting to bite a bit better as things cool down. Using poppers early in the morning and Jackall soft or hard lures later in the day have been producing 20 to 30 fish per session which is great.

Don't forget the Take a Kid Fishing Day this Sunday, 7th May at the river mouth at Elliott Heads. This is run by Sunfish in conjunction with the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries, the Queensland Industry of Recreation Fishing and Salty's. Fishing is from 9.00am until noon with a sausage sizzle afterwards. All children who plan to fish must be registered at Salty's by 2.00pm on Saturday, 6th May, and MUST be accompanied by a parent/guardian on the day.

Best breezes,
