Report 12/3/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Mar 12, 2015 2:26 pm

The two low pressure systems up north are not expected to impact on the Bundaberg region very much at this stage, other than to produce reasonable south-easterly winds that might make offshore fishing a little uncomfortable.

Last weekend most of the hot action was just off our coastline. The Two Mile Reef and the Cochrane Artificial Reef both fished extremely well. By all reports massive schools of mackeral, queenfish and tuna were smashing bait balls, with some quality snapper underneath if your lures or baits could get through the pelagic species.

Tackle World team member, young Mitch and his father had a fantastic session on the mackeral last weekend. They had success on 35g and 50g flasher metal lures retrieved quickly up from the bottom.

During the past week the Burnett has started to clean up and the fish seem to be back on the chew. There were good reports of some large whiting caught up around Splitters Creek and a few grunter back on the gravel patches. Also, a few barramundi have been quite active chasing the mullet and baitfish in the Burnett.

Some top quality mud crabs have been caught in good numbers during the past week, so it’s well worth dusting off the pots.

The Kolan River is fishing a little tough due to the fresh water running over Avondale Weir, although there have been a few nice fish caught around the mouth. Schools of small trevally and queenfish have been providing some entertainment for people staying at Miara, and a couple of barra have been caught by live baiting along the black bank.

On the fresh water scene, Lake Gregory has been producing a few bass, and the water at Lake Monduran is starting to settle, which means the barra are starting to fire up. Fishing points with wind and current flow and using lures like Jackall Squirrels has been very effective, just like it was about this time last year.

Fish with confidence,
Dale Smith
