Report 11/9/15

Post by subeditor » Fri Sep 11, 2015 8:23 am

Hope all the Dads have recovered from Father’s Day last Sunday and made the most of the magic weather we experienced around the Bundaberg area last weekend.

The boats that did head offshore all reported catching a good feed of both pelagic and reef fish. Good numbers of Spanish mackerel were caught out further offshore, as were heaps of school mackerel on the inshore reefs, and even some land-based anglers had some hot sessions spinning off the rocks along the Bargara coastline.

As the weather starts to warm up, species like mangrove jack and barramundi should really start to fire up in the Bundy area. This time last year we were just starting to catch good numbers of jacks along most rock bars and walls on both soft plastics and hard body lures.

The Kolan River is fishing well. The weed that was present seems to have cleared up, and guys from the Miara Caravan Park are reporting catches of bream, whiting and flathead off the beach and the odd jew, tailor, barra and jack from the deeper holes or the many rock bars in the Kolan.

The Burnett is still fishing extremely well. While the blue salmon have slowed the numbers of big flathead and grunter over 50cm is very impressive.

Lake Gregory is still our most productive fresh water option for bass fishing around Bundaberg. I had a fantastic session last Saturday morning landing a heap of bass on many different techniques. At first light the bass to 45cm could not refuse a well-worked popper near the lily pads. After 7.00am I changed to casting spinnerbaits through the timber which also worked very well.

Just keep in mind - the water level at the dam is still very low and a 4WD vehicle is recommended to put your boat in and out.

Fish with confidence,

Dale Smith
