Report 24/8/17

Post by subeditor » Thu Aug 24, 2017 2:44 pm

It’s looking like there will be a bit of a blow coming through the Bundaberg area over the weekend, with 15-20 knots forecast, so it’s looking like the offshore fishing will get a bit of a rest.

If you were fortunate enough to get out earlier in the week during the good weather, you would have been well rewarded with calm sea conditions and some great fishing. Most boats headed out wide and some quality catches of red emperor, coral trout, tusk fish, some big cobia and green job fish were all reported.

With the weekends offshore forecast not looking so good we are still quite lucky the local river mouths and rivers are fishing well.

There are a few tailor and school mackerel about most of the river mouths but high tide seems to be the best bite times. Most of the rock walls and rock bars are still holding good numbers of big bream, cod and a few jacks, and as the weather warms up the jacks will only get better.

Further upstream on the sand flats there has been good numbers of whiting, flathead and sickle fish all being caught. The last of the run-out tide has been fishing best, and using yabbies for bait seems to be the way to go.

Some of the deeper holes are still producing a few big grunter and a few blue salmon with most of these being caught on soft vibes.

There are also a few crabs and prawns about, but well worth the effort when you find a patch of them.

Both dams are fishing well with Lake Gregory producing some great bass fishing and Lake Monduran has turned on some great barra fishing with this warmer weather, and should only get better as summer rolls on. Most of the barra are in the 70-80cm size range and are exciting to catch at this size.

Until next time,
