Weekly Report 15 May 08

I'm feeling pretty confident about fishing prospects over the next week or so. That's because the four day weather chart looks promising and we're coming up to the full moon. I see a period of cool offshore winds arriving that will significantly improve the inshore fishing scene. We had a short taste of this wintery weather a few weeks ago. Within a couple of days, schools of steelback appeared along the coast and some excellent dart also turned up along Farnborough Beach. A few Blue threadfin were amongst them, but not in any real numbers at that stage.

Now prior to the arrival of the cooler weather, we should have a couple of days of fairly light onshore breezes. That will allow us to head out in
the bay where there should be good fishing for reefies around the Keppels and beyond. There are reports of lots of big Grey mackerel way north of Yeppoon (too far for most of us) and some monster spanos as well. Hopefully they will soon move south into our territory - next week maybe? Estuary fishing should be pretty good too, with grunter and flathead the specials. There have been some large mud crab catches lately. This is an indication that water temperatures are still fairly high. But if we get a few days of cool weather next week, that will all change.
The Fitzroy River would be worth a try. Blue threadfin should be pushing up river and there will be bream along the stone walls.
All in all, it's looking pretty good.
