Weekly Report 22 May 09

Another "boss' weather" week has just passed. The low pressure system that drowned SE Qld produced great weather for us up here. Reports coming in from mid weekers are that some good catches of Doggie mackerel have turned up. The macks have been at all the usual spots north of Yeppoon and even a few at Rida Mada, but the sharks were pretty bad there apparently. Not surprisingly last weekend, catches were fairly ordinary due to the neap tides. Huge numbers of boats took to the water and burned up many litres of fuel for little result.

Predictions are for a period of strong south-easterlies again this coming week. I'm hoping they might only blow for a few days before settling back to a more winter pattern again. Water temps are dropping, so the barra have gone into hybernation, being replaced by Blue theadfin and bream. Flathead numbers are slowly improving, but you still have to work fairly hard for a feed. Black jew exponents are hoping for fair weather in the lead up to the next full moon, as they've had a very dry run so far this season.

The other bright note has been the belated appearance of some squid around the islands. This year has been very quite on the squid front, so hopefully we're seeing the first schools turning up making for decent winter squid season. Apparently they are still in farily deep water and not yet over the shallow reefs, but be patient, they should move into the shallows soon.
