Weekly Report 22 Aug 09

Despite the weather being quite favourable last weekend, the fish failed to cooperate in the main. This was probably due to the stage of the moon and the very small tides. Hopefully things will pick up on the back of the dark moon, but the forecast is for north to north-westerlies, so that might just shut things down again. There are reports of the arrival of reasonable grunter in the Fitzroy River, particularly below Nerminbera. They will gradually move upstream and settle in places like the Lakes Creek reach and Devil's Elbow during next month.

There have also been scattered reports of good quality Spotted mackerel in the bay, mainly around the southern parts apparently. Let's hope they school up this season and provide a much overdue bonus for local fishers, as Doggie mackerel have been very scarce of late. Keep an eye on the water temperature in Keppel Bay, because as soon as it creeps above about 21 degrees, the reefies should get more active again. There have been some excellent quality whiting taken locally, but only in small numbers. They are tending to be sitting in the deeper channels in the estuaries and require a well presented fresh bait and lots of patience.
