Weekly Report 7 Mar 11

Finally we've had a week of good weather. 6 straight days of favourable offshore conditions has seen the car park at Rosslyn Bay full every day. There has been a lot therapy being had that's for sure. For the most part, the fish cooperated too. The wrecks and reefs north of Yeppoon gave up quality grunter, fingermark, cobia and Doggie mackerel, while the closer Keppel reefs saw pan-sized grassies, tuskfish and even some legal sized Large Mouth boated. Most of the real quality fish have been caught during the dark hours though, but sea conditions were very conducive to staying out overnight.

In the Fitzroy, the barra continue to turn up. The commercial netters of course are having a wow of a time, but at least rec fishers are getting a few for a change. Live bait is still the most reliable method, but some fish are starting to take a lure, even though the water is still very dirty. Corio and Waterpark are pretty fresh, so hard to find fish, but good for the prawns. Things changed dramatically on Saturday evening as the strong south-easterlies and rain came roaring through. The 4 day chart doesn't hold much joy, as the winds look like persisting all week long. We may see a bit of an easing towards the weekend, so fingers crossed. The coming weekend tides look good for estuary and river fishing in particular. If you do manage to get offshore, try the northern areas and deeper waters in Keppel bay for a feed. There have also been quite a few smallish Spanish macks in the cleaner water, so drag a few lures around and see what happens.
