Report 20/7/15

Post by Nicole Penfold » Mon Jul 20, 2015 12:58 pm

I am sorry for the lack of reports since February but this was due to the damage from Cyclone Marcia and the relocation of our shop in Yeppoon, as we had to relocate from James St to Normanby St. The new shop has now been finished off and we've moved all the stock back in. Thanks to the efforts of good friends, family members and a great landlord, we've made it.

The weather last week saw the wind ease and plenty of anglers ventured out and caught fish. Those who fished the areas like the wide ground and areas like Douglas shoals, Karamea banks caught plenty of good reef fish like Red emperor, spangled emperor, red throat and coral trout. Those who fished the areas like Perforated and Flat islands caught reef fish but had to try harder for their catch. Still, most of them came home with a good feed. Fishing around the inshore reefs like Finlays reef, the Boomi at Farnborough, the Keppel Island, Island at the mouth of Coorooman Creek and Ritamada saw plenty of Cod, Grunter and there were plenty of good salmon landed as well. Those chasing mackerel were disappointed as the mackerel caught were few and far between. Still, as they say there is always next time.

There have been plenty of mud crabs being caught and I found this out first hand this weekend. We took the old pots out and tried a few new types of pots, left them in for one tide and bagged 8 good size and heavy male crabs. Our new triangle pot prototype [see photo below] went well.

The winds will be moderate for the start of the week and then turn light east to south east by the weekend, with Sunday looking the best at this stage. There is a quarter moon Friday which will see the tide small and slow, they will be good for crabbing after the weekend as we enter into the full moon phase. The high tides this Saturday is around 5 o’clock and out around 1 o’clock, on Sunday high tide around 6 o’clock and low tide around 12 o’clock

Al’s tip of the week: Did you know fishing is a sport? If you catch a feed that is a bonus!

If you have any questions, reports or local photos send them through to coucomscrabpots@gmail.com, or drop into our new premises at the corner of Normanby and Mary St in Yeppoon. We're also on Facebook.

Till next week
