Report 17/9/15

Post by Nicole Penfold » Thu Sep 17, 2015 11:02 am

Reminder: the Coral Fin Fish Closures run from 10-14 October and 9-13 November 2015.

The winds stayed around all weekend, so all fishing offshore and even the close in reefs was impossible. This resulted in plenty of fishermen venturing into the estuaries, and many came home with a good feed. There were plenty of good whiting, bream and flathead caught. The best reports were from Corio Bay, Coorooman and the Causeway Lake, and there were barra caught at all these locations. Sizes ranged from just undersize to 90cm.

On the crabbing side of estuary fishing, plenty of people headed up and came back with a feed of quality crabs. They said they had to work hard for the feed but the crabs were certainly worth it in quality.

We have the school holidays coming up this weekend and the weather is looking a bit better for those wanting to venture out to the reefs, creeks and along the beaches. Please take a bit more care at this time, and please be a bit more patient when launching and retrieving your boat at the ramps.

The net-free areas which will come into effect at the end of the year have caused mixed reactions. A lot of commercial fishermen are unhappy about it, and are trying to find ways to offset the loss of income. Some recreational fishermen don’t care at all and say they just want the pros out and their nets. However, most rec fishers we have spoken to are concerned for the pros, and didn’t think the closure area was going to be as big as it is. These closures will be hard on some families, so as a recreational fisher please remember this and don't feel you have to get your bag limit every time you fish. If you want to know more about the Net Free Areas, the final maps are available at

The weather this weekend is looking about the same as last weekend, with the wind expected to start increasing again around Friday, Saturday and Sunday before easing early next week. The tides for the coming weekend are:

Al’s tip of the week: Did you know that when the moon rises and sets the tide is halfway in?

Till next week enjoy the fishing
